THE ALBERTA FIRE FIGHTERS' BURN CAMP FOR CHILDREN
Camp Description The journey from burn patient to burn survivor is a long and painful one. It is sustained by confidence, passion and unparalleled courage. Confronting the challenges imposed by a lifetime of pain and disfigurement is just the beginning for most burn survivors. They must also struggle to heal the emotional and psychological trauma that can be equally painful and overwhelming. The Edmonton Firefighter's Burn Treatment Society is proud to be the primary supporter and lead organizer of the Alberta Fire Fighters’ Burn Camp for Children. Campers travel from across Western and Northern Canada to attend a weeklong camp for young burn survivors aged 7-17. Doctors, Nurses and Therapists from the Edmonton Firefighter's Burn Treatment Unit join local firefighters to volunteer their time as organizers, medical staff and mentors. Campers and volunteers participate in a variety of challenging outdoor recreational activities and life changing experiences. Some activities include: an offsite hiking trip and overnight camping; a high ropes obstacle course with a zipline; a 75-ft giant swing; and a white-water rafting adventure on the Kananaskis River. One of the highlights of the week includes an enormous water-fight with firefighters from Kananaskis Emergency Services, Redwood Meadows Emergency Services, Calgary Fire Rescue Services, and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. However, camp is not all fun and games, campers also create a valuable network of friends and mentors that aid them in their continued recovery as a burn survivor. This camp is invaluable to young burn survivors and is a special time where burn survivors can just be kids again. The Alberta Fire Fighters' Burn Camp for Children is fully funded through the donations it receives, and the funds generated through fundraising campaigns. The Edmonton Firefighters Burn Treatment Society is proud of the relationships that have been built with many of Alberta’s communities and their fire departments to ensure Burn Camp is possible.
